Whiplash Injury
Marc Darrow, M.D.

A big problem that leads to whiplash is driving with the head restraints too low. When someone is in an accident, the force on the vertebrae can actually tear the vertebral end plates where the vertebrae attach to the discs and tear ligaments. Sometimes you can't see this on X- rays or MRIs as it can be a very subtle thing. So many times doctors do not see "objective findings" when they look at the diagnostic studies. They don't find anything at all, except that these people have a lot of misery. (But in many cases) it is an injury to the structures that hold up the head and that can be the ligaments, the parts of the muscles that attach to the bones, it can be the discs themselves. In addition, there are so many different side effects that can come from this, neck pain to headache, some people get allergy type symptoms, they get GI complaints where there stomach is inflamed, anxiety problems, even depression. Some people even have fibromyalgia, widespread pain, set off by a car accident.

In my opinion,
Prolotherapy is the best treatment for whiplash because what it does is help stabilize the vertebrae. Very often people think it is the muscle that is the cause of the whiplash pain and problems. But when a muscle spasms it usually spasms because there is an injury to the area where the muscle attaches to the bone and that is where we inject the Prolotherapy solutions.

How fast does
Prolotherapy work for whiplash?  It depends on the patient, some can come in for one shot and improve immediately, others may take a month or two months before they get any healing response.

In whiplash injury, I would not do
Prolotherapy for about 3-4 weeks after the injury to see how much natural healing takes place on its own. People usually stay inflamed for a few weeks, if the Inflammation doesn't go away then we use Prolotherapy to help re-inflame the area, get more blood flow to the area and create a healing situation.
