Case 1 - 45 Year-Old-Female - Mark Wheaton, M.D.

CASE 1 From Mark Wheaton, M.D.

Shoulder Instability

HISTORY: This is a 45-year-old female who works in an assembly line job. She came to our office reporting shoulder pain due to repetitive use at work. Her symptoms involved numbness in her right hand, as well as, aching, clicking and popping in the shoulder. Reaching out in front of her or across her body increased her pain. She reported constant pain as well as difficulty sleeping.

FILMS: x-rays were negative

PREVIOUS TREATMENT: This patient had already been through a significant amount of conservative care including chiropractic care, myofascial release and physical therapy, which actually increased her pain. At the time of her initial visit, she was considering surgery as an option.

DIAGNOSIS: My diagnosis was right shoulder pain due to chronic instability. Her shoulder joint was extremely loose due to injury to the connective tissue. I suggested treatment with prolotherapy to stabilize her shoulder and thereby decrease her pain.

TREATMENT BEGAN: 08/07/99

INITIAL PAIN LEVEL: 6 out of 10 (10 being the worst pain)

TREATMENT LOCATION: Right shoulder joint and surrounding connective tissues.

TREATMENT SESSIONS: 3 sessions

TREATMENT ENDED: 10/15/99

FOLLOWING TREATMENT PAIN LEVEL: 1 out of 10 (10 being the worst pain)

PATIENT RESPONSE: After her 3rd treatment:

"After only three prolotherapy treatments on my right shoulder, I am essentially pain-free. The tingling is gone, and my arm doesn't even feel tired any more after a strenuous day of repetitive movements at work."
