W. Nielsen, M.D. has twenty-three years experience as a family physician with
special emphasis on Pain Management, Patient Education, Research, Urgent Care
and Emergencies in medicine.
After graduating from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo
and completing a residency in Family Practice at W. W. Knight Family Practice
Center at Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Nielsen moved to Sandusky, Ohio
where he practiced Family Practice, Urgent Care and Clinical Research until
1993. His practice has emphasized management and diagnosis of the difficult and
undiagnosed patient with emphasis on chronic pain and disorders of the spine.
Dr. Nielsen was initially Board Certified by the American
Board of Family Practice in 1978 and last re-certified in 1994. He has passed
written certification with the American Board of Chelation Therapy and will sit
for oral board certification at the completion of a required time of
observation. He is accepted for Board Certification in Emergency Medicine and
plans to sit for written and oral exams in July of this year. He is currently
making application for the American Board of Pain Management.
Dr. Nielsen's interest in Pain Management started in 1981
when he found himself the only physician in Erie County who would see Workmen's
Compensation spine injuries. This led first to extensive patient referrals and
then a weekly Spine Clinic conjointly with the department of Orthopedics of Case
Western Reserve Medical School. Dr. Nielsen and Goeff Wilber MD with a team of
Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, and case managers saw fifty patients each
clinic day for many years.
Workmen's Compensation and other legislation ended the clinic
in 1993. During those years, he studied Pain Medicine with John Barnes, the
innovator of Myofascial Release, Cranio-Sacral therapy with Dr. Upledger,
visited many teachers, and attended many courses and clinics. In 1993, he moved
to Bluffton, Ohio and started training in Alternative Medicine with Dr. Terry
Chappell and began his work in Prolotherapy and Chelation.
In 1994, with Dr. Chappell's assistance as President of the
American College for Advancement of Medicine, Dr. Nielsen started the first
Contract Research Organization specializing in Complementary Medicine, herbals,
supplements, product validation and Medical Outcomes trials for Chelation. To
date, two multi-center trials have started from that work. The project was
abandoned for lack of funding.
In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Nielsen initiated North
Coast Clinical Research, one of the nation's largest research centers
specializing in Clinical Trials in Family Practice. He participated in 34
nationwide trials for the development of new drugs. These drugs included most of
the new High Blood Pressure drugs, the estrogen patch, most of the new
antibiotics, allergy drugs, and many others.
He also initiated and owned North Coast Clinical
Laboratories, the first chemistry and microbiology laboratory specializing in
clinical trial research on bacterial infections in the United States. He has
been an active member and displayer for many years at the Associates of Clinical
Pharmacology and Drug Information Association. He is a supporter of the
Mennonite Economic Development Association and the Mennonite Physicians
Association.
Dr. Nielsen was the host of his own radio talk show for
thirteen years. This two-hour talk show was designed originally to overcome the
blood shortage caused by the early Aid's epidemic. After the tenth anniversary
of the show, the American Red Cross awarded the "Good Neighbor Award"
for his work. the format of the show was to inform the public of changes and
controversies in American Medicine. He has written dozens of columns for local
papers dealing with patient education. Forty-three articles designed for patient
information have been written over the years by Dr. Nielsen for his patient's
use.
Public medical courses for the lay person have been organized
on a variety of subjects by Dr. Nielsen. "Save A Child" was a daylong
symposium for parents to learn home safety and resuscitation. He has taught many
Advanced Cardiac Life Support courses for hospital physicians, nurses and
support personnel.
Dr. Nielsen has a special interest in Emergency Medicine and
Outpatient Services and is Director of Paulding County Hospital Emergency
Department. He has special experience and interest in Spinal Disease, Chronic
Pain, Skin Cancer surgery and chronic pediatric infections.
